A profile of Kathleen Gerard, playing Fastrada in our May 2010 production Pippin

1) What's your name, and where are you originally from?

"My name is Kathleen Gerard and I from the United States."

2) What was your exposure to Pippin prior to this production?

"Prior to this production of Pippin I had watched the video of the Broadway production starring Ben Vareen many times! Bob Fosse is one of my favorite choreographers so I am very familer with his work. Plus I am really interested in Dark comedy like Pippin, and of course the compositions of Steven Schwartz. But this is my first time performing in Pippin"

3) What interested you about being involved with this production?

"I really love the music in this show. Plus I really enjoy doing dark musical comedy, so Pippin was a perfect choice!"

4) What character do you play? Describe them briefly.

"I play the role of Fastrada. She is basically the sly, devious, female character in the show. I see her as the Leading Players "right hand man", the one that he can always count on."

5) What do you find most interesting/thought-provoking about your character in this play?

"I love her ability to manipulate a situation to her liking. I also think it is interesting that her sideshow character is the serpent woman, because the snake is the perfect match to this character; she is sly, crafty and cunning."

6) What has been your favorite thing about rehearsals so far?

"I love the cast! Everyone is so committed to there roles, and really enjoy what they are doing!! It is a wonderful feeling to be surrounded by such great energy!!! My favorite moment in rehearsals was way back in the beginning when we all had to create the backstories for our characters. We all came together and sat in a circle with the lights off and candles glowing and read our stories to each other! It was such a wonderful experience, slightly creepy but very interesting!!!!"

7) Why do you think people should come see this production?

"I think people should come to see Pippin because it is a very interesting story, and it pretty much has it all. There is comedy, drama, and very sentimental moments. Plus the music is beautiful, and the cast is fantastic!! I think you will laugh, cry and possibly leave with a bit of a chill down your back. I think that is everything I would want to see in a dark musical comedy!!"

Come see Kathleen as Fastrada in TIP's Pippin performing May 13-16 at the Theater Sun-mall in Shinjuku.
