TIP Workshop Series:
Introduction to Lighting Design
Instructor: Marty Pauley
The technical practices of design, programming, and operation of theatrical lighting. We will cover:
Important laws of physics: light, heat, electricity, and gravity.
Working with the director and set designer; understanding the show.
Creating the lighting plan and cheat sheet.
Patching and show setup.
Programming a scene.
Scene transitions, and showing the passage of time.
Special effects; concurrent cues.
Rhythmical movement, singing and dancing.
Preparing for problems.
We will be using "MagicQ" software that you can download (no cost); bring a laptop with the software installed, if you can.
Although we will be focusing (pun intended) on the technical aspects of theatrical lighting, we hope it would be useful and interesting for other artists (such as set designers, directors, or stage managers), who are welcome to participate in programming or just observe.
