Ace the Audition - Skills for Singers: The 16-Bar Cut with Karen Pauley

Selecting and performing a 16-bar song cut is an essential audition skill. This workshop will teach you ways to adapt and present an appropriate song cut so that you can showcase your vocal range, acting abilities, and personality. Each participant will have the opportunity to perform their chosen 16-bar cut and receive constructive feedback to improve their audition material and audition technique.

When: Sunday, January 14th (Part 1) and 21st (Part 2) from 2-6PM

Where: Our Space, Hatagaya

Cost: ¥8000 for two sessions

Maximum participants: 14

Day 1

Sunday, January 14th 2024 (2-6PM)

Please bring a song that you would like to work on. The song does not need to be polished or finished and can be a work in progress. If you are unable to bring a song, Karen will have a selection of songs with her. 

In the first workshop we will cover:

• Appropriate song selection
• Creation of a 16-bar cut
• Performance techniques, including character portrayal and acting the song.
• Warm-ups
• Creating a cut from your song choice

Day 2

Sunday, January 21st (2-6PM)

Working on your 16-bar cut:

After a group warm-up you will be able to present the song you want to sing and there will be time for you to receive feedback and to work on your choice.

We will then run a mock-audition session allowing everyone to give an individual performance of their selected 16-bar cut. 

We will finish with feedback and a Q&A session. 

Materials needed:

A musical theater song that you want to work on. You can sing the song a cappella or play a backing track. If you do not have a song in mind, advice can be given by the instructor to help you select a song. 

About the instructor:

Karen has been singing for most of her life, has studied classical and contemporary styles, and has an Advanced Professional Diploma in Teaching Contemporary Singing. She is vocal director for TIP Youth, has been vocal director for seven TIP shows, and also works with Tokyo Theatre for Children. She is slated to direct TIP's upcoming production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST in May 2024.
