Co-Conceived by LYNN AHRENS, STEPHEN FLAHERTY, and ERIC IDLE
Based on the Works of DR. SEUSS

"Oh, the thinks you can think!”
One of the most-performed musicals in the world, SEUSSICAL™ is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza featuring all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo.
They transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.
Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant in a show that is sure to be fun for the whole family!
「Oh, the thinks you can think!
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
On behalf of Tokyo International Players, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to SEUSSICAL™, the final show of our 2024–2025 season!
Based on the beloved works of Dr. Seuss, this whimsical musical invites us into a vibrant world of imagination, friendship, and courage. It’s a joyful celebration of the stories we grew up with and the stories we still need as adults. After months of work this production brings together a brilliant cast and crew who have poured their hearts into every rhyme, song, and choreographed moment.
As always, live theatre is only possible because of the community that surrounds it. I want to take a moment to thank our dedicated Board of Directors, our tireless volunteers, and our generous donors. Your continued support allows us to provide opportunities for local performers and creative artists and to keep English-language theatre alive and thriving in Tokyo.
As we wrap up another successful season, we’re filled with gratitude for the stories we’ve told, the connections we’ve made, and the audiences who have joined us along the way. If you’ve enjoyed our work and want to help us grow, please consider donating at tokyoplayers.org/donations or the donations box in the lobby. Every contribution makes a difference.
Thank you for being here. We hope SEUSSICAL™ brings a smile to your face, a song to your heart, and a reminder of the power of creativity.
With heartfelt thanks,
Karen Pauley
President, Tokyo International Players
When considering a musical based on children’s books, it’s easy to overlook the deeper themes at play, but Dr. Seuss was, at heart, a political writer. Beneath the whimsical rhymes and colourful illustrations lie big ideas about individuality, education, war, power, and compassion. SEUSSICAL™ may appear to be just a fun, family-friendly musical but it carries a resonant message about imagination, resilience, and the importance of every voice...

CHOREOGRAPHER'S NOTE
Dale Geyer
Bringing SEUSSICAL™ to life has been an extraordinary adventure. Dr. Seuss’s world is one of joyful chaos and heartfelt wonder, and it’s been both a challenge and a delight to translate that spirit into movement.
Working alongside Karen once again has been a true gift. Our creative partnership has grown over many productions, and with each new project, I am reminded how lucky I am to collaborate with someone who shares a deep respect for storytelling and a fearless love of theatre...
